The Central Reserve Police Force ( CRPF) is the largest Indian Central Armed Police Force. It is under the direction by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) of the Government of India. The primary function of the CRPF is to assist the State/Union Territory in conducting police operations to ensure peace and order and also to combat insurgency. It was founded as the Crown Representative's Police on the 27th of July 1939. Following Indian Independence, it was changed to its own Central Reserve Police Force on the enactment of CRPF Act on 28 December 1949.
In addition to law and order and counter-insurgency duties as well to counter-insurgency, the CRPF plays a more significant role in India's general elections. This is particularly true for that once proud state Jammu and Kashmir, Bihar and in the North East, in which there is a lot of violence and turmoil. When the Parliamentary elections took place in September 1999, the CRPF was a key player as an army of security. In recent times, CRPF contingents are also being sent for UN missions.
